Typing Speed Test (WPM Calculator)
Test your typing speed in words per minute and accuracy, right in your browser.
What is the Typing Speed Test?
This tool measures how fast and accurately you type, reporting your speed in Words Per Minute (WPM) — the standard unit used by virtually every typing test and keyboarding course.
How WPM is calculated
By convention, "one word" for typing-speed purposes is standardized as 5 characters (including spaces), regardless of the actual words in the passage — this keeps the measurement fair whether the text has long or short words. Gross WPM = (total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. Accuracy is the percentage of characters typed that exactly matched the target passage at the same position.
How to use it
- Click into the text box and start typing the displayed passage.
- The timer starts automatically on your first keystroke.
- Your WPM and accuracy update live as you type, and finalize when you finish the passage.
- Click Restart with New Text for a fresh passage.
What's a good typing speed?
Average typing speed for most adults is commonly cited around 40 WPM, with professional typists, transcriptionists and data-entry specialists often reaching 65–90+ WPM. Accuracy matters as much as raw speed — a fast but error-prone typist usually spends more net time correcting mistakes than a somewhat slower, more accurate one.
