Estimated Royalty Per Sale

What is the KDP Royalty Calculator?

This tool estimates what you'll actually earn per sale on Kindle Direct Publishing, using Amazon's own published royalty formulas for eBooks, paperbacks and hardcovers — not a rough percentage guess.

eBook royalty formula

The 70% royalty plan applies only to list prices between $2.99 and $12.99 (this ceiling was raised from $9.99 in July 2026); Amazon also deducts a delivery fee of $0.15 per megabyte of your file size before paying out the 70%. Outside that price range, or on the 35% plan, there's no delivery fee, but the base rate is lower. For many small, text-only eBooks the 70% plan wins; for large, image-heavy files the delivery fee can eat much of the advantage — this calculator shows you the actual number either way.

Paperback and hardcover royalty formula

Print royalty = (List Price × 60% if priced at $9.99 or above, else 50%) minus the printing cost. Printing cost = a fixed cost plus a per-page cost that depends on binding and interior type (US marketplace, regular trim sizes): paperback black & white is $1.00 + $0.012/page, standard color is $1.00 + $0.0255/page, and premium color is $1.00 + $0.065/page. Hardcover (case laminate) costs more to produce — $5.65 + $0.012/page for black & white, or $5.65 + $0.065/page for premium color — and doesn't offer a standard color option. For short books of 108 pages or fewer, Amazon charges a flat fixed cost with no added per-page charge for black & white interiors ($2.30 for paperback, $5.65 for hardcover).

A note on accuracy

This calculator covers the Amazon.com (US) marketplace and regular trim sizes only — other Amazon marketplaces (UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.) use their own local currency, fixed costs and per-page rates, and very large trim sizes can carry a slightly higher per-page rate, neither of which this tool calculates. Amazon also periodically updates its royalty rates, price thresholds and printing costs. Double-check against your KDP Bookshelf's own royalty estimate, or Amazon's own Printing Costs and Royalty Calculator, before finalizing your pricing.
