What is the Amazon Backend Search Term Byte Counter?
Amazon's backend "search terms" field for a listing is limited to 250 bytes, not 250 characters — and if you go over, Amazon doesn't just truncate the overflow, it ignores the entire field. This tool counts the real UTF-8 byte length of your keyword string as you type, so you can see exactly where you stand.
Why bytes, not characters, matter
Plain English letters and digits are 1 byte each in UTF-8, so a purely ASCII keyword string's character count and byte count match. But accented letters, curly quotes, emoji or other non-ASCII characters can take 2–4 bytes each — so a string that "looks" like 240 characters in a word processor can silently blow past 250 bytes. Commas also cost a byte each, and Amazon recommends separating keywords with spaces only rather than commas.
How to use it
- Paste or type your backend keyword string.
- Watch the live byte count and progress bar — it turns amber near the limit and red once you're over.
- If you're over, trim words rather than relying on Amazon to salvage part of the field — it won't.
Tip: don't repeat words already in your title, bullets or brand name — Amazon already indexes those, so repeating them in the backend field just wastes your limited byte budget.
