Syllable Counter
Count syllables in a word or block of text, word by word.
What is the Syllable Counter?
This tool counts syllables for every word in a block of text, useful for writing haiku, poetry with a specific meter, song lyrics, or checking word-game plays where syllable count matters.
How syllables are counted
This uses a standard vowel-group counting method: it counts groups of consecutive vowels in each word, with adjustments for common patterns like a silent trailing "e" and words ending in "-ed" or "-es" that often don't add a spoken syllable. This heuristic is accurate for the large majority of common English words, though English spelling has enough exceptions that no simple rule-based method is ever 100% perfect.
How to use it
- Type a single word, or paste a full sentence or paragraph.
- See the total syllable count, plus a per-word breakdown below.
For a 5-7-5 haiku or similarly strict syllable-counted form, double-check any word the count looks uncertain on, since unusual or borrowed words are where a rule-based counter is most likely to differ from how the word is actually pronounced.
