Ideal Body Weight Calculator
Compare your ideal body weight across four established medical formulas.
What is the Ideal Body Weight Calculator?
"Ideal body weight" formulas were originally developed for clinical uses like drug dosing, not as a personal fitness target — several different formulas exist, published decades apart, and they don't always agree. This tool calculates all four side by side.
The four formulas (height in inches, base at 5 feet)
- Devine (1974): Men 50 + 2.3 × (height−60) kg; Women 45.5 + 2.3 × (height−60) kg.
- Hamwi (1964): Men 48 + 2.7 × (height−60) kg; Women 45.4 + 2.2 × (height−60) kg.
- Robinson (1983): Men 52 + 1.9 × (height−60) kg; Women 49 + 1.7 × (height−60) kg.
- Miller (1983): Men 56.2 + 1.41 × (height−60) kg; Women 53.1 + 1.36 × (height−60) kg.
How to use it
- Select your sex and enter your height.
- Compare the four results — the spread between them is itself informative, since it shows how much these decades-old formulas disagree even for identical inputs.
None of these formulas account for muscle mass, frame size, or body composition — a muscular, athletic person will often weigh well above every formula's number while still being at a healthy body fat percentage. Treat these as a loose historical reference, not a personal target.
