Why Modern Calorie Calculators Moved On From Harris-Benedict

The original standard, from 1919
The Harris-Benedict equation, published in 1919 and revised in 1984, was for decades the default formula for estimating Basal Metabolic Rate from weight, height, age and sex. It did its job reasonably well for its era, but it was built from a study population that doesn't closely resemble the general population today.
What Mifflin-St Jeor changed
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in 1990, was developed specifically to address that gap, using a larger and more contemporary dataset. Multiple later validation studies comparing the two found Mifflin-St Jeor consistently more accurate for most people, particularly for individuals who are overweight, which is part of why dietitians and nutrition apps largely shifted to it as the preferred default.
Neither formula knows your actual body
Both equations are population-average models built from four inputs: weight, height, age and sex. Neither one can see your muscle mass, hormone levels, genetics or metabolic health — all of which meaningfully affect real BMR and can shift the true number in either direction from what the formula predicts. This is exactly why the result is best treated as a starting estimate to test and adjust, rather than a precise, individualized measurement.
