The leap year gap adds up faster than expected

If you multiply your age in years by 365 to estimate your age in days, you'll be off by roughly one day for every four years you've been alive, because of leap years. For a 40-year-old, that's a gap of about 10 days — small individually, but a clear reminder that calendar math is less uniform than it looks. A true day count has to check every single year in the range for whether it was a leap year (divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400), which is exactly the kind of fiddly, easy-to-get-wrong logic that makes a proper age calculator useful instead of quick mental math.

Your years/months/days breakdown isn't just subtraction either

Calculating "26 years, 7 months, 12 days" between two dates isn't a single subtraction — it has to account for months having different lengths (28 to 31 days) and borrow correctly across month and year boundaries, similar to how you'd borrow across columns in long subtraction by hand. Age is counted differently in different cultures

South Korea officially switched to international age reckoning in legal and administrative contexts in 2023, but the traditional counting age is still used informally in some contexts.
