The Color Theory Behind Analogous and Complementary Palettes

It all starts with hue, saturation, and lightness

Most color-harmony rules are easiest to understand using the HSL model, which describes a color by its position around a 360-degree hue wheel, plus how saturated (vivid) and how light or dark it is. Color harmonies are really just rules about how far apart to place hues on that wheel.

Analogous: neighbors on the wheel

Analogous colors sit close together on the hue wheel — think of a few adjacent slices of a pie. Because the hues are similar, analogous palettes tend to feel calm and naturally cohesive, the same way colors found next to each other in nature (the yellows, oranges and reds of a sunset) feel harmonious rather than jarring.

Complementary: straight across the wheel

Complementary colors sit roughly 180 degrees apart — directly opposite each other. Pairing them creates the strongest possible contrast for a given lightness and saturation, which is exactly why complementary pairs (like orange and blue, or red and green) are common in high-visibility design: sports branding, warning labels, anything that needs to grab attention.

Monochrome: one hue, many shades

A monochrome palette keeps a single hue fixed and varies only lightness and saturation, producing shades and tints of the same underlying color. This is the safest way to guarantee a cohesive look, since there's no hue relationship to get wrong — the tradeoff is less visual contrast to work with.
