A KDP Paperback Cover Is One File, Not Three

Front, spine and back, side by side
New KDP authors sometimes expect to upload a front cover, a spine graphic and a back cover as three separate pieces, the way a print shop might handle a physical book jacket. KDP doesn't work that way — the entire wrap-around cover is a single flat image file, with back cover, spine and front cover laid out side by side in that exact order, plus bleed around the outside.
Three numbers, one dimension each
The full cover's width is (2 × trim width) + spine width + (2 × 0.125" bleed), and its height is trim height + (2 × 0.125" bleed). Every one of those inputs matters: get the spine width wrong and the front and back panels shift out of alignment; get the trim size wrong and the whole canvas is the wrong shape from the start.
Spine width isn't guesswork either
Spine width comes from page count and paper type using fixed per-page constants — roughly 0.002252" per page for white and premium color paper, 0.0025" for cream, and 0.0032" for standard color — the same figures used for our standalone spine width calculator. A late page-count change, even by a handful of pages, shifts the spine width and therefore the whole cover's dimensions.
