Remove Background

Remove the background from a photo of a person, right in your browser.

Click to choose a file or drag and drop it here

Works best on photos with a clear person in the foreground (portraits, selfies, headshots). The AI model downloads once on first use (about 12MB) and is cached by your browser after that.

What is the Remove Background tool?

This tool automatically detects the person in a photo and removes everything behind them, producing a transparent PNG — the same kind of background removal used for profile pictures, product-style portraits, or preparing a photo to place on a new background.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo with a person clearly in the foreground.
  2. The first time you use this tool, your browser downloads a small on-device AI model (about 12MB) — after that first download, it's cached and every future use is instant.
  3. Click Download PNG once the background has been removed.

How it works, and why it's different from our other tools

Unlike the other image tools on this site, which use simple pixel math, this one runs a real AI segmentation model (Google's open-source MediaPipe "Selfie Segmenter," the same technology behind virtual backgrounds in video calling apps) directly in your browser using WebAssembly. It's noticeably heavier to load than our other tools because of that, but it still runs entirely on your device — your photo is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is sent anywhere for processing.

When results may be imperfect

This tool is specifically tuned for photos of people, so it works best on portraits, selfies and headshots; it isn't designed for removing backgrounds from arbitrary objects or products. Fine detail like flyaway hair or motion blur at the edges can sometimes be imperfectly captured, as with any automatic background removal.
