Why Roman Numerals Have No Symbol for Zero

Zero as a number is a surprisingly late invention
Ancient Rome didn't have a symbol for zero because the ancient world, for the most part, didn't yet treat zero as a number you could write down and compute with at all. The concept of zero as a full-fledged number with its own place in arithmetic developed independently in ancient India by around the 5th century CE, and only reached Europe centuries later through Arabic mathematical texts — well after the Roman Empire had fallen.
Rome didn't need it for its use case
Roman numerals were primarily used for counting, recording, and basic accounting — tallying goods, marking dates, labeling chapters — not for the kind of positional arithmetic (like long division) where a zero placeholder becomes essential. For "how many" and "which one," there was simply never a practical need to write down "none."
Why this makes Roman numerals clumsy for real math
This is also a big part of why Roman numerals were eventually replaced by Hindu-Arabic numerals (0-9) for actual calculation: try multiplying MCMXCIV by XLVII using only Roman numerals, with no zero and no positional place value, and the difficulty becomes obvious fast. Roman numerals survived for things like clock faces, chapter numbers, and formal dates precisely because those are display uses, not computation.
