Why Fahrenheit Has Such Strange Round Numbers

Celsius was designed backward from water
The Celsius scale, created in 1742, was deliberately designed around water: 0°C is water's freezing point and 100°C is its boiling point at standard atmospheric pressure, with the scale evenly divided into 100 steps between them. That's why it feels so clean.
Fahrenheit was designed around something else entirely
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit's scale, proposed around 1724, predates Celsius and wasn't built around water at all. Historical accounts vary somewhat, but the most widely cited origin sets 0°F near the freezing point of a saltwater brine solution (the coldest reliably reproducible temperature Fahrenheit could create in his lab) and roughly 96°F near normal human body temperature — both chosen for lab reproducibility, not roundness. Water's freezing and boiling points simply landed wherever the math happened to place them on that pre-existing scale: 32°F and 212°F.
Why the U.S. still uses it
Fahrenheit became standard in the American colonies before the metric system existed, and the U.S. never fully switched to Celsius the way most of the rest of the world eventually did, despite several 20th-century attempts to encourage metrication. One practical argument in Fahrenheit's favor for everyday weather: its degrees are smaller (about 0.56°C per 1°F), which gives finer-grained whole numbers for describing outdoor temperature without needing decimals.
