What "Privacy-Enhanced Mode" Actually Changes on a YouTube Embed

YouTube's official embed options include a checkbox that switches an embed's domain from youtube.com to youtube-nocookie.com. The video that plays is identical either way — what changes is exactly when YouTube starts setting cookies in the visitor's browser tied to that embed.
What actually changes
According to Google's own documentation, using the youtube-nocookie.com domain means YouTube won't store cookies related to viewing preferences on a visitor's device just from the embed loading on the page — it waits until the visitor actually plays the video. On the standard youtube.com embed domain, some cookie activity can occur simply from the player loading, before any interaction.
What it doesn't change
It's not a complete guarantee of zero tracking: once a visitor actually clicks play, cookies can still be set as part of normal video playback and any ads shown. It also doesn't remove YouTube branding or change what data Google collects once someone interacts with the player. It's best understood as reducing tracking that happens passively on page load, not eliminating tracking entirely.
