Morse code was developed in the 1830s-40s by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail for the electrical telegraph — decades before Alexander Graham Bell's telephone existed. For nearly a century, it was the fastest form of long-distance communication in the world, carrying news, business, and personal messages across continents and oceans over telegraph wires and, later, radio.

The real story behind "SOS"

SOS (... --- ...) became the standard distress signal not because it stands for "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls" — it doesn't officially stand for anything. It was chosen in 1906 specifically because its pattern of three dots, three dashes, three dots is simple, unmistakable, and easy to send correctly even by an inexperienced or panicked operator under pressure, unlike more complex codes used before it. Its most famous real-world use was during the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, which helped cement SOS as the internationally recognized distress call.

Why it's technically efficient, not just historical

Morse code assigns shorter codes to the most frequently used letters in English (E is a single dot, T is a single dash) and longer codes to rare letters (like Q or Z) — the same core principle later used in modern data compression algorithms, discovered independently in Morse's era through practical trial and error rather than formal information theory.
