Amazon's Referral Fee Swings From 8% to 45% Depending on Category
Published 2026-09-14
Not one fee — a whole schedule of them
It's a common shorthand to talk about "Amazon's 15% fee" as if it were a single number, but 15% is really just the most common default rate, not a universal one. The actual referral fee schedule spans a wide range depending on product category, and pricing a new product without checking your specific category's rate can leave a real gap between expected and actual margin.
The low and high ends
Consumer Electronics, Computers, Major Appliances and Video Game Consoles sit at the low end, around 8% — while Amazon Device Accessories sits at the opposite extreme, at 45%. Most other everyday categories — Home & Kitchen, Toys & Games, Sports & Outdoors, Beauty and many more — land at the common 15% default.
Some categories change rate mid-sale
A few categories don't use one flat percentage at all. Clothing & Accessories uses a tiered rate that shifts with price — 5% up to $15, 10% from $15.01 to $20, and 17% above $20 — while Fine Jewelry charges 20% up to $250 and only 5% on the amount above that. Pricing near one of these thresholds is worth double-checking, since crossing it changes your effective fee.
